Devils Postpile – California

Devils Postpile National Monument is near Mammoth Mountain, California. An extraordinary example of columnar basalt, it was formed less than 100,000 years ago when cooling lava flow cracked into multi-sided columns. The symmetry in this rock structure is truly amazing. A beautiful trail that leads to a breathtaking view.

Well I went to Mammoth plenty of times to ski but never knew about this. Rats! What a remarkable piece of nature. Have you been there? Can you climb to the top of the basalt?   T

    • Yes! I was there last week. The photo of the symmetrical stones are from the top. There is a trail that takes you up there. Such a cool place to explore!
